This is a great question posed by one of our developers this morning at our staff meeting. So, guessing that others are asking the same question I thought I would create a post about it.</p>
<p>The quick answer is, <strong>Yes.</strong> <strong>All search engines can read PDF files.</strong> Therefore it&#8217;s important to optimize your PDF for the search engines.</p>
<p><strong>How to Optimize your PDF for SEO</strong> -</p>
<ol>
<li>First step is to make sure that you create your PDF in a text based program like Microsoft Word or Adobe Pagemaker. If you create your PDF in Photoshop, it is considered a large image and is not an actual readable PDF.</li>
<li>Optimize your title, header tags and descriptions. There are a few ways to do this.<br />
-  If you are working in Microsoft Word, use the H1, H2, H3 tags provided where necessary.<br />
-  Also, make sure that when you go into Adobe Acrobat you fill out the proper description fields. This means adding a title, subject and keywords into the appropriate content fields.<br />
-  Title your PDF with a keyword, for example it should be named keyword.pdf.<br />
-  And, lastly create alt text and captions for any images used in the document.</li>
<li>Don&#8217;t bury the PDF on your site. Make sure that you create a link to the PDF from a page on your site that is crawled often, like your homepage.</li>
</ol>
<p>There has been a bit of discussion about how well a PDF will rank compared to html content. And, while we recommend html over a PDF, there have been cases where a PDF ranked for a certain search term quicker than the html version, however, eventually the HTML landed at the top.</p>

<li>Select &#8220;exact match&#8221; or &#8220;phrase match&#8221; when doing SEO research, broad makes large jumps in lateral thinking, comes up with some terms that aren’t as great</li>

<li>Allows you to see and monitor trends, but allows you to see keywords related to the one you are looking at</li>
<li>Last few years lots of changes in keywords because economy affects what people are saying and searching for</li>
<li>Key relevance – can find that in states terms are more popular than in another – can be better to check out for regional or local search stuff</li>
<li>Rising searches – very valuable for up and coming phrases, break out means there has been like a 500% increase, so great terms to use, since new and growing – a lot of them aren’t quite as competitive</li>
<li>Monitors seasonality – this is good for mapping out key phrases for over the month, so great for blog posts, articles etc.</li>

<li>Talk about benefits not features – makes people more interested</li>

<p><strong>3 Types of searchers:</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>navigational – type in your website</li>
<li>informational – enter questions</li>
<li>transactional – buying ones/subscribing ones, download</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>*note:</strong> no tool is 100% accurate, but it’s a good ballpark estimate Using all in title helps to see who is optimized for that particular subset <strong></strong></p>
<p><strong>How many terms should you target a page?</strong> It’s subjective and need to look at competitors, and look at linkage data and where you are ranking. Look at your Page Rank, and it depends on that as well, long tails better, and then each page should have laser focus on one term. But, usually two or three phases max. <strong></strong></p>
<p><strong>Does it matter where keywords are in page content?</strong> Yes. You want it early, prominent bold, header tag, linked, title, bulleted, links, etc. Sends signal to search engines that’s what the page is about. <em></em></p>
<p><em>The above is a very thorough list of tools and ways of finding keywords. Of course this can all seem a bit overwhelming, so I would recommend finding the tools that work best for you and sticking to 2 &#8211; 3 different sources.  Also, within most of the tools talked about above there are tips on how to use those for coming up with blog titles and content ideas. If you are ever having a hard time coming up with content these are great quick fixes to get the juices flowing.</em> <em></em></p>

<p><strong>Prediction 1</strong>:<strong> +1’s to Have More Impact on Average Position Than Quality Score</strong></p>
<p>When you search for something and you are not logged into a Google account your search results will be different than when you are logged in.  For example if you search for Britney Spears products the results page shows the one he would choose as the 3rd result.  But, once logged in, since he has #1&#8242;d the result, it shows up number one.  This also works if a friend has #1&#8242;d the search result.</p>
<p>When click on it, while logged in, you will see a friend of yours that has recommended that page, Google has done research saying you are more likely to click on that page – lifting personalized results, could apply across the board and to sponsored results.</p>
<p><strong>Prediction 2: The Value of a +1</strong></p>
<p>If a +1 decreases your CPA, then it also increases your ROI.</p>
<p>When money talks, the big bosses listen.</p>
<p>Assign value to a +1 vote, because you get more click throughs when it is referred, which also has a higher conversion rate, more likely to take action.</p>
<p>Say one +1 vote increased CTR, and then it reduces your CPA, which gives you a higher return on Investment</p>
<p>Google +1 will be a great way to leverage paid search</p>

<p><strong>Prediction 3: The End of The PPC Landing Page As We Know It</strong></p>
<p>+1’s are shared between organic and sponsored listings…<br />
start to see advertisers using pages that are designed for SEO and page search</p>
<p>Usually we create lots of pages, uncrawlable, because you don’t want to get knocked for dup pages, so that you can use landing pages for these PPC campaigns, instead, you can recommend within the ad, and then all related search results will always give you the page you shared, or had a +1 from a friend, in top results</p>
<p>So, now you are not paying again for a click, because the organic search will keep coming up,</p>
<p><strong>Prediction 4: Bridging The Gap Between PPC and Social</strong></p>
<p>Should see more overlap</p>
<p>Say you create an Ad for the term &#8220;Landing page Optimization&#8221;.  Then you create a landing page for the ad to send the person who clicks on the ad to.  It stops with that.  Instead, you should be creating Ads that send them to shareable content, like a blog post on &#8220;Landing Page Optimization&#8221; where they can +1 the blog post.  Now, that the post has a +1, it is going to show up as a top result on their SERP and potentially there friends SERP,  which leads to more clicks, traffic, possibly more +1&#8242;s and hopefully will also help it to start performing better in the organic results.</p>
<p>You will want to be driving traffic to Google plus profiles once businesses are on there.  Because then when anyone searches for that company their page is going to get that lift if you add them to a circle.</p>
<p><strong>Prediction 5: Promoted +1’s</strong><br />
Google to monetize Google+ and +1’s</p>
<p>Google real time search used to incorporate promoted messages from twitter</p>
<p>Even confirmed splitting revenue with twitter</p>
<p>Google will do more outside the box, type ads for money, so Promoted +1s may make sense<br />
Google+ to remain ad free?  Maybe companies offer incentive to +1 them<br />

Prediction 6: Demographic Bidding for Sponsored Search Ads</strong></p>
<p>In the future:<br />

-  Religion<br />
-  Interests<br />
-  Income levels<br />
-  Activity on profiles, who you block etc.<br />

Prediction 7: Prediction Targeting</strong></p>
<p>Google related, toolbar launched in august</p>
<p>Toolbar suggests sites to visit, based on social activity</p>
<p>Say you search something like a plane ticket, then the PPC that pops up, based on past behavior it might be a ticket sales item for a Britney spears concert in that place you are searching for on Google for tickets.<br />

<p>I don&#8217;t expect clients to entirely understand search engine optimization when they come to us &#8211; or really even know what it is at all. And in all honesty, that&#8217;s fine, because that&#8217;s why I have a job. (Thanks for that.) </p>
<p>But, after reading this perhaps you&#8217;ll know a lot more and be that much the wiser when you talk to your Search Marketer.</p>
<h3><strong>1.</strong> <em><span style="font-weight: normal;">How bad is it to use white on white and write in a bunch of keywords?</span></em></h3>
<p>Umm really bad. Probably as bad as you can get actually. In the olden days (probably all of 10 &#8211; 12 years ago), you could possibly get away with stuffing keywords. Today? Not so much.</p>
<h3><strong>2. </strong><em><span style="font-weight: normal;">I know SEO is important, so I&#8217;m going to do it this once and get it done with It&#8217;s a one-step process, right?</span></em></h3>
<p>Sorry, no such luck. We&#8217;ll talk about it a little more later, but with search moving toward other venues like social media, local reviews, RSS, blogging, and other modern forms of web marketing, there&#8217;s no way you can do it once and be done. <a href="http://www.maine-seo.com/keywords-and-phrases/seo-is-not-a-one-time-deal" target="_blank">SEO requires constant massaging and experimentation</a>.</p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: normal;"><strong>3</strong><strong>. <span style="font-weight: normal;"><em>What are these meta-keywords I keep hearing about? Can you make me a huge list of them?</em></span></strong></span></h3>
<p>Well I could. But it probably wouldn&#8217;t do a whole lot.</p>
<p>The thing with meta-keywords is 1) <a href="http://www.maine-seo.com/search-engines/is-it-possible-to-optimize-for-every-search-engine" target="_blank">only Yahoo uses them</a> and 2) if you use too many, they&#8217;ll hurt you. So, what do I suggest? Using a <em>small</em> group of <em>focused</em> keywords for each page if you&#8217;re intent on using them. And remember &#8211; even though Yahoo uses them, they don&#8217;t have much weight at all.</p>
<h3><strong>4. </strong><em><span style="font-weight: normal;">I just don&#8217;t have time for social media. Plus, I can get away without doing it.</span></em></h3>
<p>Again, it&#8217;s really not an option any more. Soon, folks who haven&#8217;t hopped on the social media bandwagon are going to be struggling to catch up with the rest of the crowd.</p>
<p>So&#8230;<a href="http://www.maine-seo.com/social-media/how-to-leverage-manage-and-simply-deal-with-your-linkedin-profile" target="_blank">create a LinkedIn account</a>, <a href="http://www.maine-seo.com/social-media/facebook-isnt-just-for-college-kids-anymore-its-for-your-business" target="_blank">get yourself on Facebook</a>, and &#8211; if you&#8217;re feeling really socially frisky - <a href="http://www.maine-seo.com/social-media/how-to-become-a-twitter-pro-in-no-time-a-guide-for-twitter-newbies" target="_blank">join Twitter</a>!</p>
<h3><strong>5.</strong> <em><span style="font-weight: normal;">I&#8217;ve heard about this nofollow thing. Do I need to do that to all of my outgoing links?</span></em></h3>
<p>Nofollowing links is <strong>sometimes</strong> a good strategy. But that doesn&#8217;t mean you should do it to every single outgoing link. </p>

<p>Well sure you can. The problem is&#8230;search engines typically know that you bought them. Although, <a href="http://www.seobook.com/archives/002422.shtml" target="_blank">there are ways to do it without looking like a spammer</a>.</p>
<h3><strong>7. </strong><em><span style="font-weight: normal;">Does Google rank me higher if I have an AdWords campaign with them?</span></em></h3>
<p>No, Google may be the search engine of choice, but they aren&#8217;t tyrants. <h3><strong>8. </strong><em><span style="font-weight: normal;">Should I purchase a keyword rich domain and redirect it?</span></em></h3>
<p>That one actually inspired a <a href="http://www.maine-seo.com/keywords-and-phrases/should-i-purchase-a-keyword-rich-domain-and-redirect-it" target="_blank">blog post out of me</a>. Jill Whalen, much of the same opinion as me, also wrote a <a href="http://www.highrankings.com/multiple-keyword-rich-domains" target="_blank">great piece on it over at High Rankings</a>.</p>
<h3><strong>9. </strong><em><span style="font-weight: normal;">Can I post great local reviews for my own company?</span></em></h3>

<h3><strong>10. </strong><span style="font-weight: normal;">My Dad actually asked me this one:</span><em><span style="font-weight: normal;"> If I start a business, wouldn&#8217;t it be smart to figure out what people are searching for first?</span></em></h3>
<p>Brilliant, Daddy-O. Problem is, as #2 eludes, those words change all the time. However, the following are the top 3 according to Keyword Discovery&#8217;s Business sector:</p>

<li>aol.com</li>
</ol>
<p>Should be interesting what kind of business you come up with using those! <img src='http://www.maine-seo.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';)' class='wp-smiley' />  But in all seriousness, every day is different. Google has <a href="http://www.google.com/trends" target="_blank">Trends </a>to track the latest and greatest searches; and SEOmoz has<a href="http://www.seomoz.org/popular-searches" target="_blank"> Popular Searches</a> where you can look up searches by day.</p>
