Maine Tweetups: Bringing Twitter Networking to Real Life #metweetup

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

maine tweetupSince January, Maine has been celebrating tweetups like no other state. Originally started by @therichbrooks and @ccmaine, folks in the Portland region have been putting aside their iPhones and BlackBerrys (for the most part) in order to enjoy each others’ company in a physical capacity.

What’s so great about a Maine Tweetup? Well, one of the criticisms of social media is by using it, you lose the personal connection: with a voice or a face. This way, we’re getting the best of both worlds: the massive power of social media with face-to-face interaction (and perhaps a cocktail or two ;) ).

Furthermore, it’s great to get out in Portland and enjoy the company of so many great people.

Live in Maine? On Twitter? Well, join us!

Going Green in Maine with MEBSR

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

going greenLast night, a few of us from flyte attended the Maine Businesses for Social Responsibility (MEBSR) kickoff of their 2009 Leadership Series – “Social Responsibility is Smart Business”.  This first event was called “Climate Change Leadership and Triple Bottom Line Success”, and had such panelists and participants from larger corporations like FairPoint, Hannaford, and L.L. Bean to sustainability activism groups such as Clean Air-Cool Planet and Climate Counts.

It was great to see how many people came out for the event (even on a snowy evening), not to mention how much there was to learn.

I was floored by the fact that so many businesses are actually taking sustainability so seriously – primarily because it’s easier to go green on a personal level, than on a wide-scale business (especially large corporation) level.  But the same holds true for individuals as well as businesses: consider what you do and the impact it has on the environment.  Reduce.  Reuse.  Recycle.  (On a side note, if you feel like jamming out to the 3 R’s per Jack Johnson, here you go.)

I especially loved L.L. Bean’s packaging innovations: using 100% recycled material for all of their paper boxes and gift bags.  They’ve also installed a brand new system where their green plastic bags (made of 35% recycled material and can be recycled at facilities who accept #4 plastic) are shredded in their very own machine, sent back to the plant which manufactures the bags, and are then reused!  Talk about a great cycle!

One more really cool thing I’d never heard of – all of the panelists received gifts of Carbon Offsets from Maine Interfaith Power & Light.  Essentially, they help offset our carbon footprint by replacing our electricity or travel output with wind power.  Wind Watts would make a great birthday gift!  *Wink wink*

MEBSR’s second event in the series is “Entrepreneurship and Social Responsibility: Partners in Prosperity”, held up in Lewiston/Auburn on February 24.

Maine SEO Project: Maine Heart Surgical Associates

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

We’ve had a busy few weeks of finishing up SEO Projects here at flyte!  Just yesterday we finished another big project: for Maine Heart Surgical Associates.  As the Cardiac and Vascular organization just recently moved their Vascular & Vein Center to the new location in Falmouth, Maine, the marketing department wanted to optimize for that portion of their site.

So, that’s exactly what we did!  We optimized specifically for their Vascular & Vein Center – starting by cleaning up and consolidating several of the pages, as that was our biggest concern.

Then we hit the ground running with keyword research and other onpage optimization.  The second half of SEO (link building) started with Maine Heart’s intrasite linking, followed by a plan to increase backlinks.  With MHSA’s enormous untapped potential sitting in the writing hand of their surgeons, we suggested they start their own blog.  With the big move to Falmouth, however, that was nearly impossible.  But in the future, you very well may see a blog from Maine Heart!

If you have concerns about varicose veins, PAD, carotid disease, aneurysms, or venous disorders; be sure to check out Maine Heart Surgical Associates and their Vascular & Vein Center.

207 TV Appearance on Skype

Friday, August 1st, 2008

Last night I had my television debut…on Maine based show called 207. Rich did a great segment about Skype, and called me in the middle to show viewers what it’s all about. My very first 15 seconds of fame…how terribly exciting!
